At the foot of Bagua Mountain, Niu Ge has been a go-to spot for students and office workers for decades, known for its braised rice, fried rice, and stir-fried noodles. Even the hot soup and black tea on the house are flavorful.
The fried rice is perfectly cooked, coated in egg, scallions, and pepper, with tender meat slices and a rich aroma. I fell in love with its beef braised rice since high school—marinated beef stir-fried in a hot wok, which is then poured over rice after thickening for a silky taste.
Being a foodie, you should also not forget Niu Ge's signature tomato sauce. Drizzle it in a crisscross pattern on the rice for a perfect finishing touch. (Written by 陳佳新)

Che Lu Kou "bah-kinn" (pork thick soup) and "mī-suànn-kôo" (thick vermicelli soup) is a true afternoon delight.
To dine in, find a seat and call out your order. The food then arrives instantly. My recommendation is to start with the mixed flavor. Then you can order more along the way. The "bah-kinn" and the "mī-suànn-kôo" make a perfect combination. (Read next: Start Your Day Like a Local!)
Serve them to your guests—if you have one. This simple but flavorful cuisine will prove impeccable. You can also include "bah-kinn" into your personal recipe, pairing it with cooked rice. It’s simple, but amazing. (Written by 王雅玲)

Zhen Bei Ping Pork Pie is the after-school snack for students in Changhua.
Its signature half-moon-shaped pork pie and chive pocket feature crispy golden crusts, rich broth, and fragrant scallions. The paper bags help distinguish flavors—the pork pie for instance comes in a charming pig-patterned bag, making it instantly recognizable.
The filling of the chive pocket is a blend of dried tofu, glass noodles, and pepper. It boasts a layered, irresistible taste.
I am no longer a student, but the high school students now still visit Zhen Bei Ping. This humble treat continues to bridge the memories of different generations. (Written by 陳育萱)

There are a great number of tasty douhua (tofu pudding) shops in Changhua, but I always prefer traditional ones—especially the Sin Din Douhua on Minzu Road.
I like peanut douhua the best. It is refreshing with crushed ice in summer, and warming with ginger syrup in winter. The salty tangyuan soup is also unforgettable, with its chewy skin and juicy filling.
Now run by the eldest son and his wife, the Xin Ting Douhua sticks to its tradition while following new trends for making better food: they use non-GMO soybeans and handmade caramelized sugar. The taste is a bit different than before, but it still reminds me of all the old memories. (Written by 吉米大哥)

Sweet or savory——how do you like your taro?

At Changhua Frozen Taro, a 50-year-old shop on Yongxing Street, the taro is soft, fragrant, and comforting. The chilled soup is lightly sweet, perfect for summer.
I have been coming here since my student days. Sometimes I will order barley or lotus seeds to accompany the taro—a perfect combination.
Located in the narrow alley, the shop is humble but always crowded. People come here for a bowl of frozen taro to lift up their spirits.
For locals, it means more than a dessert—it is the taste of summer memories. (Written by 謝宜芬)

Railside Guabao brings you back to the days when a few coins were enough to buy a feast.
Opening in the afternoon, Railside Guabao is run by a warmhearted owner, who makes sure no one leaves hungry. Customers naturally gather, creating a relaxed, familiar vibe.
At the front, you can find guabao (pork belly buns) and corn, while at the back you can help yourself to the braised food section. Regulars exchange small gestures, adding to the homely feel. The guabao is packed with braised pork, pickled greens, peanut powder, and cilantro. The braised food—quail eggs, tofu, fish cakes, and crystal dumplings—offers quality tastes at an affordable price.
